On 19 August 2020, the Committee of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis on Science, Education and Health in the form of video conference held a meeting with senior officials of the International Labor Organization.
The meeting focused on the preparation of a national strategy on social protection between the ILO and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, social protection in Uzbekistan and the role of parliament in this area.
During the meeting, it was noted that our country attaches particular importance to the implementation in practice of UN resolutions and decisions, the development of cooperation in their implementation. It was also noted that the tasks set in the Action Strategy for the five priority areas of development of the Republic of Uzbekistan are fully consistent with the UN sustainable development goals.
In addition, they spoke about the measures taken to mitigate the negative impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the economy and support families in need of social protection.
As it was noted, on a systematic basis, work has been established to improve the efficiency of work to identify segments of the population in need of social protection and coordinate their support. The programs “Obod kishlok” and “Obod mahalla” are being consistently implemented.
At the same time, during the online meeting, attention was drawn to the effective activities of the parliament to protect the interests of the people in a pandemic. In particular, plenary sessions of the Senate and committee meetings are held online. Legislative acts were adopted aimed at countering the spread of coronavirus, expanding the powers of bodies supporting socially needing segments of the population.
Senators and deputies are actively providing assistance to the population, which is in a difficult situation during quarantine. The work with citizens’ appeals has not been stopped.
Also at the meeting, the readiness of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan was expressed for further cooperation in the consistent implementation of the recommendations of the UN statutory and treaty bodies.
