On the instructions of the President of Uzbekistan, it is planned to purchase an additional 1,000 buses for Tashkent in 2025. This was reported on January 11 in an interview with the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel by the Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan Ilkhom Makhkamov.
In October 2023, the Tashkent Khokimiyat signed an agreement with China’s BYD to purchase 2,000 K9UD eBus electric buses. BYD also planned to launch the assembly of electric buses in the capital.
In addition, according to the minister, 675 information kiosks will be installed at stops by the end of the year for purchasing single-use paper tickets with a QR code. They appeared on January 1 after the acceptance of cash for payment of travel in the cabin was cancelled.
Now passengers can pay for their trips with transport cards and the ATTO app, contactless bank cards, payment apps and QR tickets. Gazeta.uz has provided detailed information on payment methods and the reasons for the abolition of cash.
“In general, a draft resolution on the development of public transport in Tashkent will be developed by February 1, and it is also planned to adopt a new program,” said Ilkhom Makhkamov.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the total number of information kiosks currently stands at 5,100 units, of which 769 are installed at bus stops.
After the abolition of cash acceptance in bus cabins and the increase in fees for cash payments from January 1 to January 10 (compared to January 1 to January 10, 2024), the daily recorded passenger flow on buses increased by 43.5% – from 871 thousand to 1.19 million people (comparison of January 10, 2024 and 2025), and revenues increased by 36% – from 8.5 to 11.5 billion soums.
By the end of 2024, the bus fleet in Tashkent had grown to 1901, which is 28% more than in 2022 (1485). In addition, as noted, over the past two years, waiting time at bus stops has been halved – from 22 to 10-12 minutes.
